02 Nov Gifts For Coffee Lovers
Happy Holidays! Yeah, you read that right. We’ve officially entered the holiday season. Hard to believe, isn’t it! But as much as we look forward to gathering together with friends and family this year, there’s also a certain dread that sets in when trying to determine the perfect gift for that special someone in your life.
According to a recent survey, the amount of coffee sold in the United States each year equates to roughly 3 cups of coffee per day for every adult in the country. That’s 587 Million cups. That’s a lot of coffee. What’s also interesting is that about a third of all coffee drinkers are rabid, I mean avid coffee lovers, and only drink what’s become known as specialty coffee. With those numbers, the odds that you have several coffee lovers on your shopping list this holiday season is pretty high.
So what are the perfect gifts for coffee lovers, you ask? Well, we have something they’re not only going to love, but you’re going to love giving. Not only will they enjoy the gift itself, but the two of you will become the center of attention at the holiday party as you tell (and retell) the story of this unique coffee gift.
Many have heard of it, but few have had the opportunity to taste Kopi Luwak (Civet Coffee) in its authentic form. It’s been on many coffee lover’s bucket list ever since it was featured in the movie, The Bucket List.
What is Kopi Luwak?
Kopi Luwak is produced by the Asian Palm Civet, which is a cousin of the Mongoose, that lives in the Gayo Highlands of Sumatra Indonesia. There, the animal lives wild in the jungles that border smallholding coffee farms. At night, the Civet ventures into the coffee farms, sniffing out only the best, and most ripe coffee cherries available, which he then eats along with other exotic jungle fruits that make up his varied diet.
During digestion, two things happen. First, there’s an enzymatic process that removes the bitterness from the bean that is normally associated with coffee. Second, flavors from seasonal jungle fruits are infused into the bean. All of this works together to produce the most exquisite and uniquely flavored coffee on earth. It’s a process that simply can’t be replicated using any other technique.
After his feast, he then returns to the jungle where he kindly (ahem…) “deposits” what’s known as Kopi Luwak onto the jungle floor. In the morning, smallholding farmers venture into the jungle and forage for the Kopi Luwak before their regular workday begins. After locating, indexing, and collecting the coffee, it’s taken to a central collection facility where it begins a lengthy cleansing, aging and drying process.
After months of work by over 100 individuals, the coffee is then sent directly from Sumatra to Gayo Kopi in its green bean form. We then roast our coffee locally using the most advanced roasting technology available to ensure consistency in bringing out the unique flavors of this most unique specialty coffee.
Where to Buy Authentic Kopi Luwak
Finding Authentic Kopi Luwak is virtually impossible in the United States. Most coffee lovers have all but given up on the dream of ever enjoying this coffee, and it’s taken on somewhat of a pot-of-gold-at-the-end-of-the-rainbow mystique.
After traveling to Indonesia and being introduced to Kopi Luwak, our founder Jeff Bickley began searching for a credible source for this rare coffee after returning home. Unfortunately, he learned that an estimated 5000% of coffee being sold as “Wild Kopi Luwak” was fraudulent. Of the coffee that was indeed produced by the Civet, 98% is produced from animals that have been trapped, caged, and are being force fed coffee cherries. These animals live in horrendous conditions, and often become diseased and infected due to untreated lacerations from being trapped, or are a result from injuries that occur in captivity.
On his quest to find authentic and ethically sourced Kopi Luwak, Jeff was introduced one of only a couple smallholding conglomerates ethically sourcing the coffee from free-roaming wild civets. After relentless vetting and certification reviews, Jeff formed a relationship with the supplier that allowed him to import the coffee into the United States.
Jeff knew he was onto something when other coffee lovers began to inquire about how they could obtain this rare coffee, and Gayo Kopi was born.
